Manual Edema Mobilization (MEM), a method of gentle stimulation of the
lymphatics to reduce congested lymphatic edema, was specifically
developed by the speaker to help patients with sub-acute and chronic
hand/arm edema occurring post surgery/trauma or stroke. MEM addresses
over-whelmed intact normal nodes and lymphatics thus the technique is
not appropriate for post cancer lymphedema or primary lymphedema.
This course teaches the MEM method of edema reduction, how to
differentiate types of edema, integration of other edema treatments,
plus the relationship of venous and lymphatic systems to edema
reduction. MEM addresses the frustration of hand therapists who, in
spite of their best efforts, have difficulty reducing sub-acute and
chronic hand/arm edema. Edema that presents as persistent (longer than
one week) and slow to re-bound when pitted, usually indicates a
lymphatic over-loaded system.
Learn new, short (10 to 15 minute treatment), MEM protocols for
specific hand therapy diagnoses. These protocols allow hand therapists
to begin edema reduction in a therapy session, give an effective
mini-home program, and incorporate additional treatments within the
same session to meet other patient needs.
Extensive time is spent in lab, learning the method, rationale, and
problem solving approach to using MEM for reduction of persistent
edema post hand/arm trauma, surgery, or chronic stroke hand edema.
Because of the extensive lab time and case study presentation,
participants feel confident to immediately apply techniques in a
clinical setting. Class size is limited to maximize participant to
faculty interaction.
Program subject to change. Participants are cautioned to apply new information and skills within the scope of state licensure law.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- discuss anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system
- describe the rationale and how to specifically mobilize the lymphatic system for edema reduction
- list the various types and stages of edema and describe ways to treat them
- practice Manual Edema Mobilization and compression techniques for orthopedic, sub-acute post surgical hand/arm edema and stroke hand/arm edema management
- describe problem-solving techniques in relation to complications of edema management (wound healing stages, infections, etc.)
- describe edema evaluation and documentation methods

Sandra Artzberger, MS, OTR, CHT, CLT
Sandy Artzberger MS OTR CHT CLT is a national and internationally known hand therapist who helped established the first Hand Rehabilitation Center in Wisconsin. She worked for 24 years in a private practice hand therapy clinic for a group of plastic hand surgeons in Milwaukee, and she and two other therapists started the first Lymphedema Treatment Center in Wisconsin. In 1995, Sandy developed the technique of Manual Edema Mobilization. She shares this technique through her workshops that emphasize the transformation of the theoretical/scientific knowledge of the lymphatic system into critical thinking practical clinical techniques for sub acute and chronic extremity edema reduction. These workshops have been sponsored nationally and internationally in 7 countries.
Sandy is also a well known author and a former academic instructor, journal reviewer and research mentor. Her prolific writing includes journal articles, book chapters, an internet MEM course, and the VHI Kit for Lymphedema and MEM.
She is a Charter Active Member of the American Society of Hand Therapists and past Educational Division Director for ASHT.
