Chapter 5: Evaluation of the Hand and Upper Extremity
This chapter details the assessment processes and clinical assessment skills needed to perform a thorough evaluation of the injured hand. Testing procedures and scoring methods are provided. Photographs, clinical pearls, and precautions/contraindications are provided throughout the chapter and a sample evaluation is included at the end.

- describe the methods/techniques used to perform assessments: pain, wound and scar, vascular, ROM, swelling, sensation, strength and coordination, and function
- understand the scoring procedures for sensory and vascular tests
- understand the precautions and contraindications for testing strength, AROM, PROM, and volume
- describe characteristics of wound and scar status
- describe components of initial interview
