Beginner to Intermediate level workshop designed for the occupational therapist and the occupational therapy assistant who is re-entering the work force, changing specialties and/or just wanting an update on current practice.
This comprehensive workshop with labs provides an overview of the current practice in rehabilitation, review of medical terminology and abbreviations, review of documentation, hands-on practice of rehabilitation assessments and interventions with current literature review for diagnoses such as Cerebral Vascular Accidents, Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, Orthopedic Injuries, Neurological Diseases, Diabetes and the Bariatric Population.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this workshop, the therapist will:
- Recognize and define common medical terminology and abbreviations
- Demonstrate how to complete a rehabilitation assessment, design interventions and set goals based on the assessment results
- Demonstrate how to document the Occupational Therapy section of the Functional Independence Measure (FIM™)
- Describe common diagnosis, etiology and prognosis for Cerebral Vascular Accidents, Brain Injuries, Spinal Cord Injuries, Orthopedic Injuries, Neurological Diseases, Diabetes, and the Bariatric Population with potential interventions using evidence based practice
- Design home exercise programs for each diagnosis reviewed
- Demonstrate various transfer techniques and positioning in the wheelchair and bed for each diagnosis

Mo Johnson, MS, OTR/L has been an occupational therapist since 1990 specializing in adult neurological rehabilitation. She obtained her Master of Science in Occupational Therapy from San Jose State University in 2001.
She developed her Occupational Therapy knowledge and honed her skills at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center from 1990-1994. She served as a Community Rehabilitation Therapist for the Peace Corps in Paraguay from 1994 to 1996 and returned to Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center working as a Clinical Specialist/Educator from 1997-1999.
Currently, she is a clinician at Scripps Memorial Hospital in San Diego, CA where she has practiced since 2000. Mo has presented nationally and internationally on numerous topics such as management of adult brain injury, cerebral vascular accidents, constraint-induced movement therapy, spasticity management, spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis. Mo is also a guest lecturer for Upper Extremity Rehabilitation at St. Augustine University, San Diego Campus.
